MACKINAC ISLAND – Fireworks will fly over Mackinac Island this Fourth of July.

Despite some initial skepticism and similar events being canceled across Michigan, Mackinac Island Tourism announced Tuesday that the island’s famed fireworks will show will return in 2020.

“We’re thrilled to continue some of our favorite traditions on Mackinac Island. Fourth of July is a time for celebration, and there’s no better place for it than the Summer Capital of the World,” Mackinac Island Tourism Executive Director Tim Hygh said. “We have our member businesses to thank, as they really stepped up to the plate to fund and organize such a wonderful display.”

The fireworks show is set to begin just after 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 4.

Visitors are encouraged to make their way to the expansive boardwalk and Windermere Point on the west side of the island to view one of the island’s most notable celebrations each summer.

Residents and visitors should arrive well in advance of the show’s start and are asked to closely adhere to social distancing and health guidelines set by state officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Also returning for 2020 is the W.T. Rabe Stone Skipping Tournament, which is celebrating its 52nd year. The competition is set to take place at noon at Windemere Point.

Additionally, the tournament is currently scheduled to air live on ESPN3 and re-air on ESPN ‘The Ocho’ on Aug. 8.

“Hosting one of our nation’s most memorable Fourth of July celebrations is an enormous draw for Mackinac Island,” said Bob Benser, Mackinac Island hotelier and owner of Chippewa Hotel, Lilac Tree Suites & Spa and The Mackinac House.

“Despite the uncertainty this year has brought, we are finding ways to continue our traditions to the benefit of visitors and our local economy alike.”

Financial contributions made to this year’s festivities were made by Arnold Freight, Bicycle Street Inn, Chippewa Hotel, Doud’s Market, Grand Hotel, Island House, The Mackinac House, Mackinac Island Carriage Tours, Market Street Inn, Murdick’s Fudge and Windermere Hotel.
