Ferrero, maker of the popular creamy hazelnut cocoa spread Nutella, is honoring special places for breakfast across the United States. And Michigan’s own Mackinac Island was chosen as a special spot for a special breakfast.
Nutella’s limited edition “Breakfast Across America” collection of jars features 16 landmark locations. These Nutella jars showcase landscapes of places that Nutella is calling “special breakfast in special places,” according to its website.
“Nutella is all about breakfast and we hope these regional recipes inspire families to create new special breakfast memories this summer,” said Endri Shtylla, marketing director for Nutella at Ferrero U.S.A. “Whether you want to make a beignet inspired by New Orleans or blueberry pancakes from Portland, ‘Breakfast Across America’ has something for everyone to enjoy.”
The line is in stores nationwide and sold in 13-ounce and 26.5-ounce jars ranging from $4.29 to $7.99. Each jar has a picture of a notable spot of the featured area. The Mackinac Island jar has a view of the water and St. Anne’s Church.
“It’s been a good month for Mackinac Island and Pure Michigan when it comes to designations,” said Tim Hygh, executive director of Mackinac Island Tourism. “We’re flattered. This expands our name into grocery stores 12 months out of the year.”
With each location, there is a special recipe pegged to the area. On Mackinac Island, it’s pannukakku pancakes with Nutella. Pannukakku is a traditional Finnish pancake with more of a custard base that’s baked in the oven. The outcome is a custard-like airy pancake that’s puffy with a crispy exterior. You can serve the pancakes sweet or savory.
Other landmarks include Lake Tahoe, Nevada; Napa Valley, California; and New Orleans.
All the locations and recipes are on nutella.com with an interactive map.
As a nod to the designation, Todd Callewaert of the family-owned Pancake House on Mackinac Island plans on adding the Finnish-style pancake to its breakfast lineup. He expects it to be on the menu within the next five days and served with Nutella.
Mackinac Island is a small island that’s a great getaway. The island is well-known as a place where cars are banned. Visitors on the island travel around on bicycles and ride in horse-drawn carriages. Travel + Leisure named Mackinac Island as the Best Island in the Continental U.S. in its 2022 World’s Best Awards.
