History
In 1936, Harry Ryba and Victor Callewaert opened their first fudge shop on Detroit’s East Side. In just a matter of years the demand for Ryba’s mouthwatering fudge grew, and the team decided to expand their business to new locations, including Atlantic City, Navy Pier, and of course, Mackinac Island. In 1960, Harry and Victor begin to handcraft their creamy, delicious fudge in the storefront windows, luring island visitors to watch the satisfying process. In 1963, the Pancake House, a traditional breakfast spot that serves hotcakes long after conventional breakfast hours, opened up inside the Denneny building right alongside Ryba’s Fudge Shop. Today, both operations are still serving a classic taste of Mackinac Island daily.
